Expert summary
Skateboarding is the act of riding and performing tricks using a skateboard. A person who does that is called a skateboarder or a skater. Depending on the context skateboarding can be an art form, a recreational activity, a profession, or even a method of transportation. Skateboarding is relatively modern. It was probably invented sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s. The origin was related to the need felt by surfers in California who wanted something to surf when the waves were flat. Several skateboards were built for them, which were wooden boards with roller skate wheels attached to the bottom. Today skateboards are mainly meant for street skating. The material and the shape of the skateboard have changed considerably.Recommended content
